Hey there, Sarasota!
It's Mario Leyva from Lawn Goat LLC, and today I’m gonna break down everything you need to know about keeping your lawn looking awesome in our crazy Florida weather.
Listen up - mowing in Florida isn't like mowing anywhere else. Our hot, humid climate means your grass is always trying to do something, especially from late spring to early fall.
During these months, you're gonna be pushing that mower every single week.
That is if you do it yourself!
Here are a few things to consider...
What Kind of Grass do You Have?
Different grass types mean different mowing rules. Here's a quick guide to the most common Florida grasses:
St. Augustine Grass: Keep it at 3-4 inches. Mow every 5-7 days when it's growing fast.
Bermuda Grass: These guys like it short - around 1-1.5 inches. You'll be mowing every 3-4 days during peak season.
Zoysia Grass: Aim for 2-2.5 inches. Mow every 7-10 days.
Bahia Grass: Likes to be 3-4 inches tall. You can wait 10-14 days between cuts.
Mario’s Top Lawn Care Secrets
The One-Third Rule: Never cut more than a third of your grass blade at once. Trust me, your lawn will thank you. If your St. Augustine is at 4 inches, wait till it hits 6 before cutting.
Timing is Everything: Best time to mow? Late afternoon or early evening. The grass isn't as stressed, and you're keeping that soil nice and moist.
Sharp Blades = Happy Lawn: Keep your mower blades sharp. Dull blades tear up your grass and make it easier for bugs and diseases to move in.
Mix Up Your Mowing: Don't mow the same way every time. Change up your pattern to keep the grass growing evenly.
Watch Out for These Mistakes
Don't Drown Your Lawn: Too much water in summer? Recipe for disaster. Only water when the grass starts looking sad.
No Scalping Allowed: Cutting too short is like giving your lawn a bad haircut. Stick to the recommended heights.
Skip Fertilizing in the Heat: Summer's not the time to feed your lawn. You'll just burn it up.
North vs. Central vs. South Florida
Here's a pro tip - if you're up north, your lawn might take a winter nap.
Down here in Sarasota and Central/South Florida? We're mowing year-round, baby!
